Fostering Malamutes
What Is A Foster?
We would like to save all Mals, keeping them out of kill animal shelters, and the first step is finding a place for the dog while it is in rescue. There are too many dogs in need, and not enough places. We are always in desperate need of foster homes for our out-of-state dogs, while we are always happy to pull them out of kill shelters across the country we need places for them to stay while they are awaiting transport to us.
The Need and Benefits Of Foster Homes
Foster homes give our rescues the individual attention and care each needs while they some await their ride to us in Missouri and while yet others wait for a spot at our rescue facility, they are crucial for the many we get in that have to be treated for heartworm and other special needs that require a quiet environment. If you are interested in potentially becoming one of MMMR's foster homes, please email rescue@decatorsplace.org. Even though fostering for us is short term it provides us valuable insight we would not otherwise see in a dog at a shelter. It acclimates the dog to true 'home life', our goal for all of our malamutes.
What You May Need
- Collar and Leash
- ID Tag with Contact Info
- Crate
- Bowls
- Grooming Tools
- Heart worm and Flea/Tick Preventative
- Baby Gates
The only items you must provide for your foster while you have them are bowls, grooming supplies, and an identification tag that provides your contact information. If you have a tag made, avoid putting your foster's name on it because fostering will be very temporary, remember they will only be with you while awaiting transport or waiting for their spot in our facility to open up. MMMR will provide a collar, and if desired, a leash. The collar and tag should remain on the dog at all times, unless there is a potential risk. MMMR will provide heart worm prevention. Some optional items that you may want for the dog are toys and chew things. Remember, a bored dog is a destructive dog.
Who Pays Medical Expenses?
MMMR (Mid Missouri Malamute Rescue) will pay for all medical expenses while you are holding our dog; however, any health concerns must be discussed with MMMR prior to treatment unless the concern is life threatening. We have several veterinary clinics that are familiar with working with MMMR and you should use this in non-emergency situations. MMMR will pay the clinic directly for these situations.
